So, I just got my newsletter yesterday and read about the upcoming 50th anniversary of Smith House in September of '08. Heck that's a big enough deal we should start talking about it here. Seems like this forum would be a great place for all Smithies old and new to throw out ideas and discuss what plans to make.
Everyone, please contribute and start threads if need be for particular discussions, like around entertainment for example, or whatever.

Hey, I could imagine trying to make it to that. Maybe the planners will read these forums and actually try to create some activities from some of our old memories of the old activities. But I'm not the starter that I used to be. I can imagine looking around the house a bit, and then mostly just hanging out with somebody I know. If there are activities, all the better.
In any case, a big anniversary is probably a great idea. Get some guys that haven't been back to the house for a long time, and then hit them up for contributions for improvements. It'll work.

It would give me a reason to drag the wife and kids back. They'll be old enough for such a trip by that time too. Just some random ideas I have: Make it before school starts if at all possible. School hampers a lot of people with kids. Some current Smithies might be impacted, but this is more about alumni right? Ok, I've honestly never been to any alumni gatherings so forgive me for not knowing how they typically shake out. Will there be like a BBQ at the lake or something? A place with equipment where kids can play? Maybe City Park rather? Um, try to get a group discount rate at 1 or 2 hotels in town so we can hang out together as much as possible, and save money too. Have games for adults and kids alike...with prizes. (this keeps the kids happy and when kids are happy, adults are happy) Compile, like 50 years of music. Music triggers a lot of memories and maybe we can have a request thread here or something for those tunes that people remember pumping into the upstairs hallway. Stuff like Def Leppard, Guns'N'Roses, AC/DC from when I was there. Other decades may vary. Anneliese might know this. Who is the oldest Smith alum? Any from that class of 58? We should definitely do our utmost to get as many of those guys to the party as we can. Does Irene Putnam have any living descendants in the area still? When the Smithies are on the phone with alumni this fundraising season, chat them up about this event! The more lead notice the better, so get people's interest now. Wow, that was more than a few ideas.

50th MESSHACACS? Canoe race? Ha ha
I would probably do something like this. A campfire would be good out a Pillsbury at night or somewhere. Ultimate. Teams by 1/2 decades, (early 80's, late 80's, etc.) Alumns vs. new meat. A meal cooked by volunteer's and ate in the dining room. A lot of sh*T went down in there! That would bring back some memories.

These ideas are sounding good!! I think I posted somewhere before, that we have been having our annual meeting on Open House Weekend for about three years now. We do a few fun things, but we really need to pull out the stops for this event. Don't forget to add a Pub Crawl as one of the events. I like the idea of doing it sometime in the summer. My vote is for Early August of 08.

Yes, we should have a pub crawl. We'll probably all be shocked which bars have closed though. I'm guessing, and hoping that we'll have such a turnout that the house itself won't hold everyone and we'll need to rent a pavilion or something. Somebody local needs to scope out the options. Are things on campus available for alumni? Not sure where, but I've heard there's an art gallery. Do they host reception type gatherings?

A few years ago, a new alumni center was built in the South end zone of the old football stadium. I went to a wedding reception in it for a Smithie last Fall. It is a really nice facilitiy. We should check into using it. I think you are right in assuming that we will have too many people to use the house.

We'll probably all be shocked which bars have closed though. Dropped into Manhattan this past fall. There was a bar on 17th Street, the opposite direction as the university, where we used to go play pool and drink beer. I got there a fair amount anyway, with different mixes of guys. I was surprised to see that it was not only closed, but is now a church. Yep, one of those storefront churches, where they just renovated and moved into an existing space. I guess that one won't be on the pub crawl. Mark

Please tell me that Rusty's Last Chance is still standing. Please. I'll have to wear my Around the World Beer Tour shirt to this if I can make it. Got a picture of Dan with all the bottles we drank. I know you helped knock off a few countries with us Mark.

Jem: Actually, I recall being out of loop on that one. I know you and Dan were doing that, and I think I watched you guys stage the bottles for the famous picture on the stairs going up to the third floor. My memory isn't good enough to know why I was distracted at that particular time. Maybe that was the semester when I was dating Taressa, and I was spening more time with her then on important things like drinking beer with you guys.

Really? Ok. Well, I know we dragged various people out to help us get rid of things like Pabst Light. I know you were busy with grad stuff for a while there too. Was Taressa pre or post Africa? I thought she was pre.
Gah, I apologize for diverting this thread. We should have a separate beer discussion thread somewhere.

I wanna talk Taressa! I only barely remember that name, nothing else. Maybe Mark was treating her like one of Tim's girlfriends ;D
I went through Manhattan last Christmas. They have a Buffalo Wild Wings. Rusty's is still there. I can't remember the names of some of the other bars but most of them are still there in one form or another. They need an Aggieville web cam. I'll look, you never know.
I think the empty lot is still there where Bomber's and the other bar on the other floor of the building burned down.
Need another topic of bar names and experiences in Aggieville. Like the Green Chicken and the Pink Taco Mexican joint and the riots. Could combine with "beer"!

I have been reading all of these 50th anniversary plans. Exciting!! The annual alumni meeting is April 14th and this will be one of our agenda items. We are going to need an alum to be the chairman of the 50th anniversary celebration. Ideally we should probably have a commitee. In any case, it could be a great time if we get enough planning done. If anyone woudl like to volunteer to be in chair of the event, I would be happy to take that message to the meeting.

I think someone closer to Manhattan should chair it but I would happy to be on a committee if I can swing it.

Hey I posted the alumni meeting update in the wrong place. There was a discussion about the 50th anniversary. One thing to include will be an ultimate tournament. Maybe you can be in charge of that Jeremy. By the way, the alums beat the house in ultimate again this year at the annual meeting. That means the alums are now 3-0.
