Ok, another new thread to hopefully trigger some road trip memories.
Me, I had a few really good ones. After the end of school my freshman year, Dan D and Craig W needed a cheap way to get home back East and Keith K had the car. I just joined along to help drive and split gas costs, since I didn't have a summer job lined up yet.
We camped at campgrounds wherever we could, had a scary night in MO. Finally we got to the DC area where we dropped off Craig and headed up to Maine, stopping briefly to see some sights in Boston. Dan's family shared some great hospitality and yummy crepes before Keith and I made the return trip via upstate New York where we had one night in a beautiful campground.
Then, there was the week I went down to Austin with the KSU Crew for spring break and bunch of guys decided they'd come down to the campground too and bring Jim B.'s boat for some waterskiing. Well, we had one really bad night of torrential rain where I woke up sleeping in a puddle and learned that the Smith guys had all crammed under the topper of Jim's truck to escape the rain.
One other memorable trip that I didn't even take was when we mentioned to Libor K that he should do something exciting. He proceeded to drive straight through over night all the way down to Padre Island, TX. He bought a t-shirt, walked on the beach...and drove straight back. LOL

Ah, road trips.
#1 for me will always be Def Leppard in Wichita, early in their 1987/8 Hysteria tour. The thing that made it so memorable was that Chet Davidson, Robert Brooks, Dave Mog, and I hyped the trip so much before the actual event. Hard to believe that the concert could live up to how much we hyped it, but it did.
#2 might be the trip some of us took to Jason Dierk's dad's funeral. I think Scott Hane was in the car, and I wish I could remember who the third was. The main thing I remember was Jason getting in front of a pretty good crowd and talking about his dad and how much he loved him. I wasn't able to do that when I got that same opportunity a few years ago.
#3 might be a trip I took by myself. Dan Dostie was working one summer in Hugoton, in the southwest corner of Kansas. I had a fight in Manhattan with a girlfriend late one summer night, and my reaction was to jump in my car and drive through the night to Hugoton. I've still got the t-shirt I bought there.
#4 might be the caravan we took to Wichita to a fraternity party that Jim B. organized with one of his friends there. Lots of good memories from that party. Poor Sean O'Connor drank way too much in the first 10 minutes of the party, and he was pretty much down for the count the rest of the night.
#5 might be when Kevin White was pining for his girlfriend in Texas. It was either his or his girlfriend's birthday, so I drove him down for a long weekend. That was a nice time to get to know Kevin better.
#6 might be the night after some Smith party when somebody said "Let's go to Nebraska!" I don't remember how many cars made the trip, but I think it was Robert Brooks and I in my car. We tooled up to the state line, turned around, and came back.
Then there were the various trips to people's houses. I remember Dan coming to my house in Scott City once or twice. I remember several trips each to Wichita to Jeremy's house, and Lawrence to Scott H's house, and Wakefield to Jerry's house, and rural Pott County to Brian Frank's farm house... and lots of trips to Wamego when Chet and Tiff moved over there.
I wonder how much I'm forgetting?

I remember your #4. My girlfriend and I had a fight at the party and she wound up making out with Jim! I got pretty pissed, but not at Jim. Jim felt really, really bad though. I have no idea what that girl is up to these days.
Didn't Scott R. end up puking out somebody's car window on the ride home the next day?

This is awesome! Keep it coming guys.
R. Brooks, Mog, "The Hand", and some others of us went to TX Jam and some of us spent the night in the parking lot of the Cotton Bowl. Saw great bands and a great show. I can't remember who all made that trip.
Mark that DL concert did live up to the hype!

Now that Dan is here I have to share a road trip he and I took that is slightly outside of normal road trip parameters. He and I happened to both be living as exchange students in France the same year. He was in the south and I was in the north, however, but we managed to meet up in Paris and use some train passes we both had for a European train adventure during our Christmas break. Where did we meet up? In the Louvre under the glass pyramid of course!
We went to Rome for Christmas itself and attended Christmas mass at the Vatican. We were within 10 feet of the Pope as he processed down the aisle. We toured the forum ruins and then headed north to stay with a friend of Dan's in Parma. OMG, Italian hospitality is so awesome. We had homemade pasta every day and authentic Parmesan cheese. I think I had my first taste of Spumante then (but not my last). They drove us around town and countryside. Beautiful. Then, the plan was to go to Milan and hook up with other friends of Dan's. That's where things went awry. The friends ended up not able to meet us and while we were just wandering around Milan waiting for a train to head out, we became the subjects of a pickpocket. Dan's passport and train pass were stolen right out of his pocket and we were left devastated.
We weren't able to leave Italy without a passport, nor were we able to stay in a hotel until we went to the Milan police and got a special permission note. It was like 2 am or so when we stumbled into a place for the night. I slept in while Dan rose to go to the embassy or consul or whatever to get a replacement passport.
We still had no train pass for Dan so we had to return to France, which became an adventure of itself. We stopped all along the Riviera for New Year's Eve in Nice, a stop in Arles, Marseille, Carcassonne and finally back to Dan's in Toulouse. Man, I will never forget that journey as long as I live.
Then, not really a road trip for me, but an extended one for Mark was when he was evacuated from Africa and came through France. I took him around Paris and my host town for some fun times then too.

Man, I remember hearing that story in a long letter from Dan. He must have sent me a picture that you guys took as the Pope walked by, because I've got a good image of it in my head.
And yep, I guess the trip from Sierra Leone and Senegal to Paris and LeHavre to see you was probably the ultimate road trip for me. That picture of you and me with wine and baguettes under the Eiffle Tower is one of my favorites from those days.

Wow! Lots of good memories here. In fact its a bit overwhelming for me. But it gives me ideas for two new topics. How about International Adventures and Favorite Cars and Car Stories. I will dig up some pics and get em started.
