to anybody new dropping by since the board was linked from the Alumni page: Hey, drop a note in here or somewhere to let us know you've arrived. This is all sort of an experiment and I'd like to know just how many folks we're reaching with this. You should be able to post as a guest without creating an account if that's bugging you. Just tell us who you are.

Well, sadly, I had to disable the guest posting feature, or rather, force everyone to be registered and log in to post messages or replies. Hopefully it's not a big deal, but we were getting some spam or hack attacks or something. Someone or someTHING was posting funky character messages.
Sorry for the added hassle, but hopefully true alumni are registering anyway. I don't want to resort to approving members but that would be the next step if the problem continues.

Happy New Year to everyone. We have some new faces finding their way here. That's great! Looks like we're getting more and more views. Keep spreading the news word of mouth if you talk to other alumni that aren't here yet. I guess I should talk to Anneliese about putting this site in the Newsletter.

Howdy folks! Just a note to say hello. My name is Shawn Turner, I'm the current Smith House president for Spring 2007. I'm also the webmaster of www.ksu.edu/smithhouse so if there's anything you'd like to see up there let me know. There's also a page for you, the alumni at that page, where you'll find some fun pictures from Smithies past, including some newly posted pictures from Alum Russel Woodworth, they're pretty funny. Thanks for taking the time to keep in touch with your Smith House Roots, I hope to see many of you at the Annual Meeting on April 14th!

Hey Jeremy, Got my Smith notes and went to the Smith House website as I was composing a brief letter to Anneliesse. Saw the link here that you told me about last summer and decided to take another stab. Think I got this time. I started a new thread about myself on the Intro page but that is as far as I got. I look forward to uploading pics and reading everyone elses pages later on! Nice Job!

Well, last week I went down to Greensburg to help out with the tornado relief. The damage was amazing. Very few buildings are left standing and what trees are left standing have only the largest branches left and very little bark. A friend took some pictures, so if I can get a copy, I'll post a few. The last place I worked at, the only thing left of the house after the tornado was the basement and the only whole item the owner found was a drawer from a dresser. I worked with an Amish-Mennonite group from Lyndon, KS (about 30 min south of Topeka). I've been working with these guys doing some dialect research and thought it would be good to go with them to Greensburg. We knocked down the remains of some houses and raked up debris from the lots so they can try to rebuild. It was a lot of hard work. I'm still sore.

I've gotten to see a few old (and I mean old) Smithies this summer.
My nephew Mikie and I got together at a DeHaven family reunion. It was good to see him and his family again!
Last weekend I went to a cook-out at Brian Scharping's house and John Caudill was there as well. We had a great time catching up. Of course I felt really old with all of the little ones running around. Turns out that Brian lives about 2 miles away from me - so I look forward to many more get togethers.
Brad Ward and I also manage to have lunch every once in a while.
I look forward to seeing the rest of you. If you are ever in Wichita - send me an e-mail.
Joel D.

Did you tell them all about this forum? I hope so. My aunt and uncle used to live in Lyndon before the passed away. I don't know if you guys had connections to Wichita when the tornadoes of 1991 blew through there. I had recently had my appendix removed (by Dr. Tom Shields no less) and I was home in Wichita recovering. The doctors at the McConnell air base were checking up on my post-op healing. Anyway, I was on the couch watching tv when it suddenly got very dark outside and the tornado sirens started blaring. I think I hobbled to the basement, but I may have just stayed planted on the couch. The winds were not that high at our house as I recall. Anyway, the next day I had to go get checked by the docs and they were now in a temporary medical unit set up in a warehouse or hanger because a car had been flipped onto the lobby of the hospital. So, all that happened just 2 miles from my house. I suppose they got a major overhaul to the base hospital from all that.

So, I thought my friend had taken some pictures of the damage in Greensburg, but turns out he didn't take very many at all. So, here's one with me in it. We're getting ready to rip the roof off the house. The guy on top is sawing a hole to drop the strap through. Didn't work because we couldn't get the cats back far enough (they ran into a concrete wall behind them.) We had to take out the middle walls first, then we were able to pull the roof. Most of the damage was actually done by us. The house was in fairly decent shape when we started, but it had been moved a couple of inches on its foundation, so the owner said to demo it. Anyway, this is an example of what I did there. I was in Texas at Lackland AFB going through training when the tornado hit McConnell. I remember someone telling me about it. The base did get a new med center from it.
